RACEHORSES BURNED
FIRE IN TRAINING STABLES.
THREE VALUED AT £IOOO. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, March. 10. TJiree young thoroughbred racing liorses, valued at about £IOOO, were burned to death when the racing stables of Outhbert Morse, trainer, of Takanini, were destroyed by fire late on Saturday night. The loss on buildings, racing equipment and feed is estimated a.t £BSO. None of the loss is covered iby insurance. The outbreak was discovered at about 10.30 p.m., when Mr Morse’s son was roused from sleep by the sound of horses stamping and knicking in the stables. He rushed outside to find the stables almost enveloped in flames. Three horses were in loose boxes in the centre of the stables. Morse junior and neighbours made repeated attempts to reach the horses but the doorway and walls of the building were enveloped in flames. When it was obvious that the animals were doomed efforts were concentrated on having the adjoining outbuildings and preventing the flames from reaching the house. A motor car was saved from a garage adjoining the stables and a small one-room “bach” was also saved. Mr Morse, the owner, was at Te Rapa with two ihorses. Hie said lie would lose heavily, as none of the buildings or valuable ' racing equipment was insured. One of the destroyed horses, a two-year-old colt, Springfield, raced 'by Miss H. Walker, of Auckland, had been entered to race at Paeroa next Saturday. It was valued at about £SOO. The other two horses were Rimu Rose, a two-yera-old filly owned by Mr S. Jackson, of Papakura, and a yearling filly by Tea Tray out of Star Attraction, owned by Air J. Martin, of Remuera.
