NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. HEATS IN THE MILE EVENT. AUCKLAND, February 15. Heats of the mile men’s swimming championship of New Zealand decided to-night werq marked by victory in the first heat of J. Neville, a Taranaki swimmer, previously unknown outside hi» own centre. His time was 23min 56 l-ssee, and' this was equalled the winner of the second heat, W. Johnson (Auckland). Results are:— First heat : J. Neville (Taranaki) 1, J. Watkins (Hawke’s Bay) 2, N. Crump (Auckland) 3. .Watkins took the lead just after the u start, and maintaining a smooth stroke increased his advantage to ten yards at the half-distance. Watkins and Crump decreased his lead over the remainder of the distance, but when they were only a yard behind him and 60 yards remained Crump suddenly fell back. In an exciting finish Neville won by a yard, Watkins defeating Crump by 10 yards. Time, 23min 56 l-6sec.
Second heat: W. Johnson (Auckland) 1, J. O’Driscoll (Otago) 2, 0. Buchanan (Auckland) 3. Johnson went to the front at half a mile and -won by 25 yards, OVDriscoll being 30 yards ahead of Buchanan. Time, 23min 56 l-ssec.
