Soviet forces suffered a reverse in a pitched battle with Mongols at Cheltenham, Outer Mongolia, yesterday, according to messages that are reaching here. The. fight followed an order issued by the Soviet commander of the district, demanding sequestration of all domestic animals for the ,Soviet troops at Vilyenehinsk. When the order was unheeded, several Mongols were butchered by Soviet soldiers as an example to others.
Incensed at the outrage, about 500 Mongols, (arming .themselves, .exterminated every member of the Soviet garrison that numbered 50. The Soviet authorities immediately rushed a detachment of troops to the city, but the Mongols successfully resisted these, compelling headlong flight. The situation is fraught with dire possibilities, as, according to a report, theSoyiet intends drastic reprisals.
