Stammers (England), 2-6, 7-5, 6-2; Frau Metaxa (Austria) and Mdlle. Rosambert (France) defeated Miss J. Hartigan and Mrs Molesworth (Australia), 6-2, 6-1. Realising that he was the only Britisher left in the singles, Perry was very nervous against consequently the Italian, playing cqolly, led by two sets to one. The match ended tragically. Perry was playing 2-1 in the fourth set when he slipped badly and .strained his foot. Perry, crying out in pain, pluckily completed the match, but wjs overcome and fainted immediately tne last ball was played. The Cramm-Menzel match produced the best tennis of the tournament, the clean, hard hitting of both players evoking great enthusiasm. Cramm was victorious only after a long strenuous contest.

Crawford began unimpressively, being upset by Hughes’s heavily shots, but later he attacked Hughes’s backhand. The Englishman then tried lobbing, but Crawford’s smashes and volleys were cleverly angled. Boussus, against Austin, was leading o-2 in the first set, when Austin took five games in a row. Boussus was on top in the next two sets. Austin attempted to take the net, but he frequently passed. Austin rallied after the interval, winning the fourth set, which exhausted him, Boussus finally scoring an easy victory. The unfortunate ending to the match takes little from the merit of de Stefani’s victory.* Ho returned Perry’s best shots for a lead of two sets to one, and his chances of winning were brighter than Perry’s. Then the accident occurred. DAVIS CUP CONTEST. (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) BERLIN, May 29. The Davis Cup match, Germany against France, will.bo played on June 8, 9 and 10.
