MOTORIST TO BE SENTENCED.
CHARGE OF RECKLESS DRIVING.
£2O FINE FOR NOT STOPPING.
(Per Preßs Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Catapulted, in a head-on collision, over a car racing along the Main South road near Sockbum at the estimated speed of 50 miles an hour, a cyclist, Mr James Bowie Reid, had a miraculous, escape from death on April 24. Victor Frederick Melville, the driver of the car, did not stop and was located in Dunedin under an assumed name.. To-day he appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. on several charges, to which he pleaded guilty. The Magistrate characterised the collision as "the worst possible case of a hit-and-run motorist." On a charge of reckless driving accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. For failing to stop he was fined the maximum amount of £2O, with costs, and for failing to report the accident he was convicted and dischai'ged.
