Throughout the night and again today rain continued; to stall steadily over southern Enpiand, bringing welcome relief to farmers and horticulturists, and to the troops who for some days and nights past have been fighting heath fires. „ The rain did not extend to north ot the Midlands, where, although the drought has not been so prolonged as in the south, the countryside is ■;n a very parched condition and water shortage is felt in many villages.
