FOOTBALL.

TARANAKI DEFEAT OTAGO^. DUNEDIN,' September 13. The Taranaki touring Rugby team defeated Otago to-day at Carisbrook by 15 points to 14. The game was evenly contested throughout, _ but Otago's defeat was due to the failure of their inside backs to break through. The forwards were well matched, though the visitors, notably S. Fookes and Wetere, were quicker to break from the scrums. Simon, the Otago half-back, was bustled all day. The Taranaki backs did nothing in the way of combined attack, though their defence was solid; and for the most part they were content to play off Otago'3 mistakes.

RUGBY RULINGS. UNIFORM IN INTERPRETATION. Doubt- as to whether Rugby referees were doing their part in helping to secure a uniformity of rulings was expressed by Mr R. E. J. Martin at the Wellington Rugby Referees' reunion on Saturday evening. "During the year the New Zealand Rugby Union has sanctioned the playing of international rules in their entirety, in New Zealand," said Mr Martin. "No doubt the idea was to get uniformity of rules, so that no matter where Rugby is played, in any part of. the world, all would be playing under the same set of rules, but I doubt whether we referees are doinc our part to assist the union to bring about the desired uniformity. "Saturday after Saturday we see referees each giving a different interpretation of the rules; for instance, those dealing with the placing of the ball in the scrum, the knock-on and what really constitutes a mark. "This is all very confusing to -layers and public alike," said Mr Martin. "There can be only one interpretation of the rules under which we are playing, and next year we should make an earnest endeavour to pet uniformity of rulings amonfr ourselves. If we do this we will be'doing a great service

not only to the Now Zealand Rugby Union but to the players and to all connected with the game in the 'Dominion."
