FOOTBALL.

TEAM WALKS OFF FIELD. AUCKLAND, August 28. The final Rugby match of the season, played at Mercury Bay, resulted in United (Bpts) defeating Kaimarama (opts). Owing to a difference between the Kaimarama team and the referee (Mr Minifie),- the Kaimarama players left the ground half an hour before time. Tills was as a protest against the referee giving a penalty kick to United, which was thought to be unjust. THE ASHBURTON UNION. RAKAIA CLUB’S PROTEST. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, tlio president (Mr J. 0. C. McLachlan) occupying the chair. The New Zealand Union advised that the protest by the Rakaia Football Club had been considered and it had been ruled that the protest was out of order in that it was not submitted in the time allowed by the Ashburton Union’s rules. A matter of playing a junior grade player in a (third grade game was one which should be dealt with by the Ashburton Union and the club had its remedy in this case and should proceed in a constitutional way. It ivas decided to advise the club of this ruling. The Marlborough Union wrote acknowledging tlie hospitality extended to its touring team in Ashburton and stated that members of the party were loud in their praise of tlie hospitality of both Union members and citizens. Reporting oil the match against Canterbury B on Saturday, Mr H. Porter (manager) stated that the game was, a poor exhibition of Rugby and a shocking display of goal kicking by the Ashburton side, to which fact it owed its defeat. In the second spell, after a slight rearrangement, Ashburton played a much better game, especially in the forwards, and would have won only for the poor goal kicking. The game was played in a friendly spirit throughout and the conduct of the players was excellent. Mr R. Lynn was appointed manager of the third grade representative team. The Representative Teams.
