AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S TOURNEY

VICTORIA WINS STATE TITLE

The national women’s golf championship of Australia ‘ tournament opened to-day on the Victoria golf links.

Results: —• Victoria beat New South "Wales by 3 matches to 1. Tasmania heat South Australia by 5 games to 0. Victoria beat Tasmania by 4 matches to 1, and became again the champion State.

Miss Odette Lefebvre (New South Wales) and Miss Susie Tolhurst (Victoria) opened the carnival with one of the best matches even seen here. Miss Lefebvre went out in 34, being two up. Miss Tolhurst came home square on fours winning on the last green, doing the 18 holes in 73. In the .handicap events Miss' B. Gaisford (New Zealand) clipped three strokes off the course record held by Mrs Ivo Whitton, returning a gross 77 and finishing fifth. Mrs E. Shaw (Eastern) 71 (14) won the event.

Mrs H. Dogshun (New Zealand), took 80, and Miss J. Williams 87. NEW ZEALANDER’S MISFORTUNE MRS WILLIAMS INDISPOSED MELBOURNE, August 28. The New Zealand lady golfers, who do not compete as a team till Friday, are experiencing bad luck. Mrs Guy Williams is suffering from influenza, and is a doubtful starter. Some of the other players have heavy colds. WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS HOKITIKA, August 28. The West Coast'golf championships were concluded on Saturday afternoon. The men’s final, played over 36 holes, was won by the title-holder, A. K. Smith, of Greymouth, who defeated Adamson, of Hokitika, -2 up and 1. The match was a very interesting, one. There was little difference between the players on .the tees and fairways, but Adamson was in poor form on the greens, which was the chief factor m Smith’s win. The ladies’ final resulted in Mrs Cunningham (Grey) defeating Miss Griffin (Grey), 7 up and 6. The veterans’ match was won by Kettle (Grey), who defeated Waines (Grey) 2 up and 1. THE MAYFIELD CLUB The Mayfield Golf Club on Saturday played two rounds of the women’s and men’s junior championships. The following is .the draw, for those who qualified : Mrs D. J. .Morrow v.
