WARSHIPS RESTORE ORDER

Rioting by the populace as a protest against the imposition of taxes by the Governor resulted in the rushing of two warships to the port and the occupation of the city by armed sailors. A number of citizens have been, arrested and sailors are patrolling the streets, The Governor’s action was taken in disregard of a vote of protest by the elected members of the , 0 Government Council.
The Island of St. Pierre, near the south coast of Newfoundland, is a Ftencli possession. Its area is -ten square miles and its population 3000. Since July, 1921, the St. Pierre group and the adjacent Miquelon group have been under the control of a governor, assisted by a consultative council of administration and municipal councils. The islands, being mostly barren rock, are unsuited for. agriculture. The chief industry is cod fishing, The local Budget for 1930 was: — Receipts 15,317,890 francs; expenditure 15,317,890.
