A WHIRLWIND

_ *». . SHOWGROUNDS SHEDS DAMAGED ROOF LIFTED FIFTY FEET. EXCITEMENT AT CARTERTON. (Per Press Association). CARTERTON, This Day. There was an extraordinary happening here at 9.45 this morning. Heavy rain had been falling but ceased, conditions being calm and quiet. Suddenly a tremendously* powerful whirlwind swept along Belvedere Street, unroofing a small shed and striking with ter#iiic force the motor display sheds on the Showgrounds. These cruinpled up like matchwood. End posts, rafters, and corrugated iron roofs shot up into the ah- to a height of some 50 feet. The noise of the wind and smashing timbers was deafening. A section of iron roof 50 feet square flew through the air at a great rate and was, dumped in an unrecognisable mass of twisted iron and splintered wood 40 yards away. As suddenly as the commotion started it ceased. No other part of the town was affected. The sheds are a total wreck, practically nothing worth salvaging being left.
