INVESTIGATION OF REPORTS STATUS OF VINES IN QUESTION (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 8. The chairman of the Amateur Rules Committee of .tho United States Lawn Tennis Association (Mr Louis Carrutliers) says that the amateur status of H. Ellsworth Vines is under investigation as the result of widespread reports linking his name with professional offers. When informed of Mr Carru/thors’s statement, Vines declared: ‘‘l think it a good idea ; it will save, me denying rumours every day.” ENGLISH WOMAN IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, August 8. At Rye, Miss D. E. Round, a member of the British team that contested the Wightman Cup, competing in the eastern championships, beat Miss Carolyn Roberts, of New Rochelle, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in an early round. Miss Betty/ Nuthall is not competing.
