FIELD OF SPORT.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Onlooker.") With the passing of summer sports, golf is again calling for the attention of many sportsmen in the Ashburton County and both the men's and women's sections of the Ashburton golf Club have commenced their winterseason. April B—Qualifying round, captain's trophy, 32 to qualify. The season of the Men's Club opened auspiciously last week, when a good number of members played in a bogey match. The scores returned were somewhat flattering, as the Colonel was beaten by five players in no uncertain manner. The score of 5 up returned by Dr. J. Connor was full of merit, especially as the doctor uses an iron off the tee. No doubt some of the players will receive the attentions of the handicapping committee. J. T. Smith returned a good card of 2 up off a 4-3 handicap. He completed each round in 36. H.' E. Bonnington came home with 2 up, which on ordinary occasions would carry off the prize. The good scores are to a large extent the result of the long run on the ball at present. A duffed shot at present does not meet with the fate which it deserves. When the much needed rain has come the long carry on the ball will tell its tale, and the player who pitches his ball up to the green will receive his reward. It is very pleasing to see new members turning out and taking an interest in the game. As a game golf can be inexpensive and expensive, it all depends on the individual tastes. Anyone thinking of starting the game late in life can be assured of a great deal of useful exercise and pleasure. The reduction in subscriptions and entrance fees by the club was a move in the light direction. In order to start match play amongst members at an early date, the Committee have placed the- qualifying round for the captain's trophy on next Saturday. As there are 32 to qualify on one round of stroke play, everyone should have an excellent chance of qualifying and taking part in the resulting games which will be played off on handicap. Think of swinging the club, if you want smoothness and control. Swing, don't hit. The golfing swing is a rhythmic thing, With a sweet straight follow-through. When you watch a "pro" you know that's so; But does it apply to you? To members of the Ashburton Bowling Club, the most important event of

the past week was the match between the Christchurch Bowling Centre and the Ashburton Sub-Centre, which was played on the Rakaia green on Saturday. Additional interest was aroused when the president of the Sub-Centre announced that Mr J. F. Langley had generously donated a cup to be played for annually. After a very close contest, the Sub-Centre won by one point. The game was played in the goodnatured spirit which is found among bowlers. The Ashburton Club was represented by three rinks. The frink skipped by Higgins put up a good score—3s to 17 against a Barrington. rink. This game was level, 9 all, at the afternoon tea adjournment, but from then on Ashburton had the best of the game. Milsom's rink played Chambers (Sumner), and had a very close game throughout, finishing 22 to 23 in Sumner's favour. Dunn's link played a strong combination £rom the Canterbury Club, skipped by Barney Finnegan, the Ashburton Club's delegate to the Centre. The Canterbury team proved too good, and won by 26 to 15. The Ashburton Club will be represented at the Christchurch Easter Tournament by two rinks. One of the rinks will be comprised of young players, with an experienced skip. These players have all started well during the season, and should give a good account of themselves. Progressive pairs tournaments will be held on the Ashburton green on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and the season will be closed immediately after Easter, when a number of the players who make a hobby of bowls in the summer will transfer their energies to the Scotchmen's golf course.
