CAMPBELL DEFEATS MACDONALD (Special to “The Guardian.”) TIMARU, March 12. The first professional boxing contest staged at Timaru for four years drew a packed house at the Theatre Royal this evening, when Alan Campbell, of of Timaru, heavy-weight champion of New Zealand, defeated 'Richie MacDonald, of Auckland, ex-middle-weight champion of Australia and New Zealand, in the tenth round of a 15-round contest. A beautiful straight left, which connected with monotonous regularity, together with a cleverlyvaried attack, gave the advantage to Campbell in every round except the seventh, MacDonald being heavily punished at long range. The Aucklander fought bravely against a heavier, faster and more youthful opponent, but it was obvious from the outset that the contest would not go the distance. Campbell weighed-in at 12.5, and MacDonald at 11.10. Although badly beaten, MacDonald will always lie remembered for liis game display.
HUGHES BEATS WHITLOW. AVELLTNGTON, March 12. Allen AVhitlow, the second boxer im ported by the AVellington Boxing Association from the United States, made his first appearance in a New Zealand ring to-night, when he was outpointed by Archie Hughes, who won on a foul from Joey Thomas, of Chicago, here last Monday week. Whitlow., who is a fast, clever, aggressive two-handed fighter, made the mistake of endeavouring from the start to knock the Austialian out. Hughes, however, was in the pink of condition, and scored ill the in-iighting. At the close of a stirring contest, which vastly pleased a rather thin house, the judges disagreed and the referee, \Mr Ned Perry, gave Ids verdict for Hughes.
