THE MADDISON' TROPHY. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. (Special to “The Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Plav in the Mnddison Trophy competition for the single-handed championship of the Christchurch Bowling Centre was commenced on the Christchurch Club’s green yesterday afternoon. The green was in excellent order, and the weather conditions were favourable for .good play. Only the singles champions of clubs affiliated to the Christchurch Centre are eligible to take part in the competition, for which the record number of 30 entries were received this year. The trophy was presented to the Centre by the late ,3lr J. C. Aladdison. a member ol the Christchurch Bowling Club. W. Hedges (Allenton) had a bye in the first round, •‘and when the second round was completed the following players remained in the competition: G. Tatt-erson (Rakaia), A. F. Rollinson (Opawa), .1. Ainger (Christchurch), H. ii. Gakev, St. Albans), J. 3farthi (Sumner), W. Hedges (Allenton), Rev. E. Bandy (Papnnui) and L. Sandford (Spreydon). Oakey non the competition in 1920-27. The competition will be continued on the Christchurch green next Thursday, when the remaining three rounds will bo played. The draw for the third round is ns follows: Tattorson plays Rollinson, Ainger plays Sandford, Bandy plays Martin, Oakey plays Hedges. In the first round the results of matches in which Ashburton County players took part.were:, G. 'Patterson (Rakain) 20. R. Haworth (1. in wood) 9; A. F. Rollinson (Opawa) 11, ,J. C. ('. Mc'Lachlnn (Asldmiton) 13: E. 31onk (Kaiapoi AY.M.C.) 18, W. J. Cookslcy (Methven) 11. In the second round the results of matches plaved by Ashburton County men were; Tatterson (Rakaia) 22, W. J. Dobbs (Cashmere) 8; ,W. Hedges (Allenton) 19, Lindon (Rangiora) 14. There were few close finishes in the first round, most of the games being won by good margins. Rollinson had a hard, light against 3leLachlan. In the second round there were several closely-fought contests. There was an interesting change <of fortunes in the game between Hedges and Lindon. At the lltli head Lindon had a score| of. 14 to 3, hut he did not score again,
and Hedges won with a margin of five points. The. competition was inaugurated in 1907, D. Campbell, of Ashburton, winning that year. J. Templeton (Allop-, ton) won the trophy in 1928.
