CELEBRATIONS TO-MORROW ATTRACTIONS IN ASHBURTON. FOOTBALL, SHOOTING, HUNTING.

The anniversary of the birth of King George V. will be celebrated by a public holiday to-morrow. Several sports fixtures have been arranged and Ashburton will have a representative football match as the cliioF attraction. Representative Rugby. The Ashburton County representative team will make its first appearance this season, playing the annual match against Otago University. The visitors will arrive by the second express this evening and will be billeted out while in Ashburton. They will be entertained by their respective hosts to-night and will be the guests of Mr and Mrs F. H. Knight at a social evening to-morrow. A third grade competition match between Old Boys v. High-School will be played as a curtain-raiser to the big match, commencing at 1.30 o’clock. The ’Varsity team for to-morrow was not available to-day. The Ashburton team is as follows: — Full-back: F. Hood (Hinds). Three-quarters: G. Stephen (Hampstead), G. Day (Hampstead, captain), K. McCormick (Allenton). Five-eighths: H. Lilburne (Rakaia), J. Todd (Old Boys). Half-back: G. Dalton (Methven). Wing-forward: 0. "Whiting (Mayfield; A. McCormick (Metliven), J. McLauchlan (Rakaia), C. Pawson (Old Boys), L. Dalton (Metliven), J. Sowden (Mayfield), J. Mulliern (Hampstead), and J. Farr (Old Boys). Reserves. —W. Burgess (Mayfield), J. Lilley (Methven), F. Fox (Allenton), S. Pennal (Allenton), C. "Welsh (Old Boys). Mr J. C. C. McLaclilan lias been appointed manager and Mr C. Day will referee. Mr S. H. Sullivan is the team’s coach. Mr R. Featherston will referee the curtain raiser. 1 Christchurch Hounds 1 Meet. The Christchurch Hounds, which arrived in Ashburton to-day, will be assembled at the Winchmore School at 11.30 o’clock to-morrow under the jurisdiction of the Ashburton Committee of the Christchurch Hunt. It is anticipated that this meet will be one of the most successful of its kind ever held in Ashburton and special efforts are being made by the local officials to cater for a large following. The country selected is excellent for the purpose and already a large number of people have intimated their intention to take part in the meet.

Miniature Rifle Meeting

The Mid-Canterbury Miniature Rifle Championship meeting, conducted by the Ashburton Miniature Rifle Club will be held in the Club’s range in Burnett Street, and will continue throughout the day. Some teams have already fired off to save time to-mon-ow and good scoring has been noted. This meeting is usually the Mecca for rifle shots in the County and this year a good entrv lias been received from outside centres as well. Some further shooting will take place to-night in order to further save time to-morrow. Other Attractions. A conference of Presbyterian Sundav School teachers in the County will be held in St. Andrew’s Hall to-mor-row. commencing at 10 o’clock, after visiting delegates have been entertained at morning tea. The Rev. A. G. Irvine will preside over the morning session, and Mr E. Buchanan will preside over the afternoon session, which will commence at 1 o’clock. The Rev. J. C. Young (Leeston) and the Rev. J. Robertson (Cashmere Hills) will also take part in the proceedings, which will be open to all teachers and others interested.

A basketball tournament is being held in Timaru, but Ashburton will not be represented. A hockey tournament will he held in Christchurch, and Ashburton will be represented by teams from the Tinwald and Rakaia Clubs, and probablv by one from the Old Girls’ Club. The British team of Rugby footballers will play a match against Wellington, at Wellington, • to-morrow. This match will be broadcast.
