OBSTETRICAL APPEAL.

Sir, —I have to thank the president of the Ashburton "branch of the New Zealand Obsterical Society for stating the aim and object of the obstetrical appeal. 1 regret that Mr Lill should have seen fit to make such a belittling remark on an appeal the objective of which was the concern of future humanity. We naturally expect that Cie chairman of the Hospital Board would so cast' his remarks as to give a “lead” rather than to “mislead” those who are not as well versed on the subject as the people whom he represents would expect him to be. Mr Lill knew full well what the obstetrical appeal was for, because he stated when the appeal was launched that it was “a deserving cause, only it was unfortunate that it clashed with the Cancer Campaign appeal.” One would naturally expect, then, that, he would have given the appeal before the County Council the support it deserved. Let us sincerely hope that Mr Lill was not having a. shot at anyone at the head of the Ashburton obstetrical appeal, because his utterance was undoubtedly biased. Our public bodies call for men of vision and unbiased mind. I am sure the ratepayers, as well as I, have not any desire to misunderstand Mr Lill, and I invite him to qualify the belittling statement he made when he placed the Obstetrical Appeal in a false light, which he undoubtedly did do when lie stated that the £50,000 was “to train half-a-dozen nurses in midwifery.” “A DONATOR.”
