GIRL GUIDES.
ASHBURTON TROOP IN CAMP. GATHERING AT WINCHESTER. Many Asliburton residents took advantage of the fine weather yesterday to visit the Girl Guides' camp at Winchester, where 47 Ashburton Guides, in command of Captain I. Hillier and Lieutenant R. Cuff, are under canvas with 25 from Timaru, including one captain and three lieutenants, and 20 from Waimate, including four officers. The camp is under the supervision of Ranger-Cap-tain Cooper (Camp Organiser for the South Island). The Asliburton contingent left on Thursday morning and arrived at 1.45 p.m., and by tea time the tents were up and well secured. A troop of Christchurch Boy Scouts, who are also in camp at Winchester, and residents of the town considerably assisted the girls in preparing the camp, and the officers were very grateful for their services. The weather has not been good, and rain has fallen on several occasions, which has tended to make conditions outside uncomfortable. This, however, has been minimised by the cutting of tracks through the grass. The interiors of the tents have remained dry and comfortable. Owing to the weather the camp time-table has not been adhered to, but will be adopted as soon as the weather is favourable. The Guides rise at 7 a.m. and retire at 9 p.m., and lights are out at 10 p.m., and an inspection is made to see that all are comfortable for the night. The health of all the Guides is exceptionally good, and all are enjoying the camp. The camp will be open for visitors during the New Year holidays and on Thursday and Sunday.
