TORRENTIAL RAIN.
ASHBURTON GORGE EXPERIENCE ROADWAY BLOCKED BY SLIDE. A torrential downpour was experienced in the Ashburton Gorge at about 6.30 p.m. yesterday. Conditions throughout the day had been ideal, and many people, including Ashburton residents, 6pent the day at the Gorge. The ra>*was heralded by several peals of thunder, and immediately the picnickers were hurrying to" pack their things before the rain fell. With such force did the rain fall that it was not very long before the road between the coal-mine 9 and 1 the Hakatero Station was covered with running water inches deep in "laces. Part of the road was blocked with stones, shale and 6mall boulders precipitated on to the road by a landslide, and motorists were forced to find a passage among the gorse, bushes and boulders to negotiate the stretch. (Difficulty was also experienced on portions of the road where there were wash-outs, and more than one car had to be towed out. On other parts of the road the motor tracks were so deep that the water rushing along in them had the appearance of miniature raging torrents.
