FARMERS' UNION.

THE ASHBURTON BRANCH. THE PRICE OP TWIN®. The Ashburton Branch of the Farmers' Union met this afternoon, Mr H. Wills presiding oyer an improved attendance. . • ■ Mr W. T. Lill wad appointed delegate to the conference to be held in regard to the Arbitration Court shortly. . . The secretary (Mr H. Christian) was instructed to write to the Pig-Breeders Association asking for information m regard to the marketing of pigs, with special reference to the remark made by a visitor to the Dominion recently, that it wag impossible to obtain good bacon in the North Island. Speaking of the high price of twine, Mr H. Watts advocated the use of the locally-made article, stating that he had saved as much as £8 by buying it in a season's heavy cutting. It was the opinion of the meeting that New Zealand twine, in addition to the saving in price, was as good in quality a£ the imported material. Mr Lill suggested that a South Island twine manufacturer should be approached in order to discover at what price he would be prepared to supply ton lots to the Ashburton Union. ' ~ It was agreed that if prices and discounts were satisfactory, a ton would be ordered as a trial. Leaflets issued by the New Zealand Farmers' Union, explaining the aims of the organisation, were distributed, the chairman drawing special attention to an appreciative article by Mr L R. Partridge, of the Wellington Manufacturers' Association, on the work' or the Union. !„.,;'., j On the motion of Mr Lill, it was decided to request the Mid-Canterbury Executive to approach the Associated Auctioneers, again asking that ram lambs mixed with stores at markets should be specified. The position said Mr Lill, was that ram lambs, on being fattened and sent to the freezing works, were rejected and returned to the farmer as a loss. Reference was made to the recent farmers' field day, and the hope was expressed that the benefits! derived from the lectures would be as valuable as they deserved to be.
