THE EARTHQUAKE.
MANY SHOCKS IN THE NORTH. ALARMING NIGHT AT CLARENCE (.Per Pras*> Association./ BLENHEIM, May 2. Stories of the experiences of residents on the East Coast during the long series of earthquakes! on Thursday night are coming to hand slowly, and show that a very alarming night was put in, particularly in the vicinity of the Clarence Bridge settlement and around about Kaikoura. \ Some of the workmen at the Clarence Bridge counted up to 43 distinct shocks during Thursday night, the worst being a particularly heavy shock at 11.30 p.m. The disturbances were also felt at intervals throughout yesterday, and there were two further shocks last night. Reports from the Clarence state that chimneys are down in all directions, one at Mr F. Parker's residence crashing through the roof, while a second chimney also collapsed. A water tank was also shifted out of position. All the goods on the shelves of the Clarence Bridge store were bundled to the floor, and some of the new timbers on the Clarence Bridge were moved Bine inches in an upstream direction. It is reported that the earthquakes were severe at Puhi Puhi, near Kaikoura, but no details have been recorded. The telephones all around Clarence Bridge were thrown out of order as a result of the disturbances.
