EMBEZZLEMENT ALLEGED.

AN ACCOUNTANT CHARGED. Charles Henry Akins, an accountant, aged 52 years, residing at Tay Street, Invercargill (Mr R. A. Cuthbert), was charged before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., at the Christchurch Police Court on Saturday with having embezzled £37 alleged to have been received bv him on account of the Stony Creek Sawmilling Proprietary Company on December 1, 1922, at Stawell, Victoria, Australia. Counsel for accused said that Akins had been manager of a sawmill in Melbourne, which had gone into voluntary liquidation, and he had come over to New Zealand. He had just commenced business in Invercargill as a coal merchant. On receiving cable advice from his wife that the charge had been laid, he had immediately taken steps to return to the Commonwealth and face the music. He was on his way back to Australia when he was arrested. Counsel asked that Akins be released on bail, or failing that, remanded to appear in Victoria, Australia. "I cannot do that," said his Worship. Mr Cuthbert said Akins was a man of means; he bad a substantial credit balance in Invercaraill, and lie owned property in Victoria. He could get substantial bondsmen here, and in those'" circumstances he asked for bail. Akins was remanded to appear in Christchurch on May 9. Bail was allowed, self in £3OO and two sureties of £l5O each.
