METHVEN GOLF CLUB

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The Methven Golf Club held its opening ceremony on Saturday, when a large number of members and friends took part. The day was cold and wintry, but this did not deter a large number taking part in the mixed foursome, which occupied the whole afternoon. The links, although far from being in first-class order, have been much improved, and the addition of bunkers made play far more interesting than previously. After the draw for partners had taken place, the president (Mr S. G. Holmes) congratulated the club on the way its members had turned out. In declaring the links open for the season he expressed the hope that the club would experience a successful and enjoyable season. Mr Stanley Smith, vice-president, called for cheers for the president, which were heartily given. All present were entertained at afternoon tea by the president and Mrs S. G. Holmes, at the conclusion of which the secretary,, Mr Walter, A. Haden, on behalf of members and visitors, thanked Mr and Mrs Holmes for their hospitality. On his call three cheers were given in their honour. Mr Stanley Smith expressed the general regret felt by members at the president being unable to join in the club's activities owing to health reasons and hoped he would soon be restored to full health and vigour.

Owing to the lateness of the hour the mixed foursome could not be finished. Many members who were late for the draw in the foursome played friendly games, and the links have never before seen so many golfers engaged at the one time. Mr A. Gray, of Christchurch, arrived on Saturday evening, and is to make an inspection of the links. A report will be forwarded by him at a later date, giving recommendations.
