STEAMSHIP COMPETITION

An interesting development in the shipping competition to Australia is the Norddeutcher Lloyd's decision to run a passenger service, via Cape of Good Hope, beginning in June with the motor-ship Konigsberg. A CONFESSION OF FAILURE. COMMONWEALTH SHIPS. LONDON, May 2. The shipping correspondent of the "Morning Post," commenting on the invitation of tenders for the purchase of the Commonwealth Line steamers, sa y S :—"This is a practical confession of' the inability of the State to run shipping as a commercial enterprise. Shipping is a business requiring the greatest skill in the hands of experienced private owners. In State enterprise that personal skill is lacking."
