Mr A. H. Field, formerly of Ashburton, and now of Timaru, is snending a holiday in Ashburton.

Miss Eileen D. Smith, a pupil of the Ashburton Girls’ High School, has been notified that she has obtained a partial pass in matriculation.

A London cablegram .says the specialists’ bulletin states that the Marquis Curzon’s condition is satisfactory, notwithstanding that he had a restless day.

The Hon. C. E. Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will be one of the speakers at the Ashburton Returned Soldiers’ Club’s annual dinner on Thursday evening next.

Ensign G. H. Pratt and Mrs Pratt, of the Ashburton Salvation Army, are at present in Wellington attending the annual Army Congress.

A Sydney cablegram announces the dbath of Mr Thomas Clarke, at the age of 72. Mr Clarke was formerly Town Clerk of South Dunedin, and is an exLord Mayor of Sydney.

The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, will arrive in Ashburton at 9.45 a.m. to-morrow from the. south. The County Council will receive the Minister at its offices, after which any person desirous of interviewing him may do so. The Minister will leave for the north about 12.30 p.m.

Mr J. F. K. Jamieson, of Tycho, in the Timaru district, who was injured in a motor-car accident near Chertsey on Sunday, is progressing very favourably in the Ashburton County Hospital. He is expected to be able to return home at the end of this week.

At the close of the performance of the Gay Galateers last evening the members of the company met on the stage, and Mr L. T. J. Ryan, on hew half of the Galateers, presented the pianiste, Miss D. - Wilkie, with a silver entree dish, suitably engraved, as an appreciation of her splendid services as pianiste, and also to mark the occasion of her appipaching marriage. Eulogistic references were made by several members to the ability displayed by Miss Wilkie, and to the great assistance she had given to the musical portion of the performance. Miss Wilkie suitably acknowledged the gift, and stated that it had been a pleasure to assist.
