OBITUARY.

MR LAWRENCE BIRKS. CHIEF ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. ' (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 25. Mr Lawrence Birks, Chief Electrical Engineer to the Public Works Department, died this evening. The circumstances reveal a sad story- Mr Jinks recently started for Europe. He attended an important conference in Adelaide, where the doctors advised " him to return to New Zealand. He did so, and resumed work, but shortly afterwards entered a private hospital and underwent a serious operation. He gradually sank, and died this evening. His wife died recently. He leaves several young children.

Mr Lawrence Birks was for some years in Christchurch, where he was district electrical engineer. Upon the retirement from the Department or Mr Evan Parry, Mr Birks succeeded him as chief electrical engineer. While in Christchurch, Mr Birks was a prominent member of the Philosophical Institute, and was for a term its presi4mt.
