SCULLING.

HADFIELD’S COLLAPSE. WANGANUI, July 23. In view of the fact that private letters received a day or two before the race conveyed the information that Hadfield had cracked up in training, the result of Saturday’s race caused little surprise here, though some of the most ardent supporters of the challenger clung to the hope that he would pull himself together and row well on the day. However, the description of the race shows that Hadfield failed altogether, for some reason of other, to row up to what was expected of him two or three weeks ago. Though it has been forced home to his best friends now that lie is not in the championship class among professionals, it is peculiar that the challenger began to go to pieces from the cune lhiddon arrived on the scene and was seen to be rowing in great form. it will be remembered that Hadfield cracked up just the same a fortnight before the race on the W anganui. A private telegram received here states that the time in the Godsellriharpe race over the same course vas only four seconds slower than that taken by Paddon, though no doubt the latter could have done much better had ho been pushed. Still, if the tidal conditions were at allj equal, Godsell and Sharpe both rowed better than Hadfield. The message states that Sharpe put up a splendid race and that it was one of the greatest struggles ever seen, the Wanganui man making a plucky effort at the finish, being beaten by only half a. length.
