EMBARGO ON CATTLE

CANADA AND OTHER DOMINIONS

(Per Press Association, Copyright.) . LONDON, December 12. The Bill removing the embargo l on the importation of Canadian cattle was read.a third time in the House of Commons.

A storm was occasioned by the withdrawal of thja clause permitting the importation oJt cattle from other dominions on the same terms as Canadian, which • Government supporters opposed. Sir Newton Moore insisted that a pledge had been’/,'given to Mr Hughes that suoboa clause would lie inserted. “What is the us© of kow-towing to one dominion?” he asked,, “while injuring Britain’s reputation with another?” Sir Newton Moore recalled the fact that' some of their best blood stock .had been imported from Australia, instancing Carbine. Aloreover, he said, Australia had recently passed a Bill providing for a.'bonus of 10s on the 'export of cattle, which was highly inconstifient with the British Government discouraging such a trade. j Mr John Ward said he had seed documents pledging the insertion of the clause. It was scandalous for the Government to withdraw the clause after the written understanding with the dominions. . The Labourites opposed the deletion of the clause, which was nevertheless deleted.

Since the third reading of the ?Bill Sir Newton Afoore has seen Lord Novar, Secretary for Scotland, and Mr Ormsbv Gore, Secretary for the Colonies, and has'. asked them-'to secure the reinsertion of 1 the clause m the House of Lords. It is understood that the Hign Commissioners are approaching the Duke of Devonshire (Minister for the to-morrow on the subject.
