RED CROSS FUND.

MEETING OF ASHBURTON COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of tho Ashburton Red Cross Society was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Ihe President (Mrs R. Galbraith) presided over a good attendance of members. The secretary of the Christchurch Branch wrote acknowledging the 11 cases of articles which had been fori warded since the last meeting, and thanking the Ashburton Society for the work which had been carried out. The socretary reported that all the hospital ship work had now been disposed of. The resignations of Mesdames T. R. Mowat and J. Findlay and Miss Stevenson wore accepted with regret, and the- secretary reported that she had written to the ladies mentioned thanking them for the work they had done. The secretary of the - Christchurch Branch of the St. John Ambulance Association wrote suggesting a schemo for the control of the society's finances by a men's committee.—lt was decided to write stating that the society was quite capable of managing its own finances.

A deputation from the local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association waited on the society, asking its cooperation in the scheme for Red Cross collections in the streets, in line with the scheme recently suggested by the Governor (Lord Liverpool).—Mr J. Readhead, who headed the deputation, said that the association felt that it did not have the influence that the society exerted throughout the country, and that the collection would be more of a success if the country branches of the society could be induced to give their help. The collection was to take place on October 30—It was decided that the society do all in its power to assist the movement, and all the representatives of the country branches present promised to organise collections in their respective districts.—Mrs D. Wood suggested a homo delicacy stall in connection with the day, and it was decided that the country branches be asked to co-operate in that also.—lt was resolved to donate £50 towards the effort, and n. committed, consisting of Mesdames R. Galbraith, W. K. Watson, D. Wood, L. M. Espagne, and F. Smith, was sot up to confer with tho St. John Ambulance Association on the organisation of the collection.

The secretary was instructed to writet to Mr T. Bullock thanking him for his kindness in providing a room for the accommodation of the society, and for the kindness and assistance generally which he had given it. Votes of thanks to the Borough Council; to tho Town Clerk; to Mr J. Tucker, for timber for shelves : and to Mr A. Moore and the-boys at the Technical School 'for erecting tho shelves, were passed. ' The St. Stephen's Sewing Guild intimated its indention of working for. the R-ed Cross Society every Wednesday afternoon, and that'members of the congregation bur] bpp-n ivvHar] in attend.
