NO-LICENSE: BROKEN HILL AND ASHBURTON.

To the Editor. Sir, —I was delighted to read in your issue of "May. 25 an account of the* NoLicense demonstration. Undoubtedly Ashburton is "notorious," and since visiting your charming town, I feel a personal interest in all that is said of same. * In this State the liquor people publish a paper called "Fairplay," and in a recent issue that paper stated that, owing to Ashburton being a No-License town, it was unable to secure an adequate water supply. Any of yoxir read- i ers that know Broken Hill will bear me out when I say that this city of 40,000 people has never had an adequate water supply, and by the same reasoning the Broken Hill people would be justified in saying "Broken Hill cannot get an adequate water supply because it has so many hotels—namely,: 73, many of , which are simply beer shops^" ■ . 1 should like to express my gratitude in finding that the extraordinary statements of Mr Losina are being contradicted by the New Zealanders. His statements have been published broadcast by the liquor people, who seem to seize upon such utterances with as much eagerness as the gore-gobbling section of this State viewed the BurnsJohnson fight. The No-License workers in Ashburton will be encouraged to learn that, after eighteen months' fighting in the Law Courts to upset the overwhelming vote for No-License here, the Special Licensing Court is to sit on the 26th instant, when it is hoped that the full number of hotels—namely, 18—the law allows will be closed. Hoping that Ashburton will keep the flag of No-License flying in spite of the tricks of the liquor party, which are as natural to them as to a monkey.-^am, Broken Hill, New South Wales."
