THE VETERINARY COLLEGE.

EARLY ESTABLISHMENT PROMISED.

"In reply to your application of April 8 tor a further grant >n am . or the cost of buildings tor the Veterinary Wchool, i have to say that ■ the grant ot fciJOOO tor that purpose should be sufficient, or, if not, that the council should provide the additional amount thax may be necessary. The Minister hopes to hear that the necessary buildings well be commenced at an early date." This' was a letter received from the Inspector-general of Schools by the Utagb University Council at its last meeting. Jt was sent, as is obvious, m reply to -an application from the council' for an increased" grant for building purposes m connection with the new Veterinary School. Further correspondence on the subject wsis also read. Among others, was the following letter, which had been sent to Mr W. T. Kingston, of Ashburton, m reply to an inquiry from him on the subject of the establishment of a veterinary department at the, Otago University, and the facilities to be offered students of obtaining the diploma of Bachelor of Veterinary Science. "In. reply to your letter of the 16tli April last, addressed to the ]|pn. the Minister of Agriculture, and'by him referred to this department, I "am directed to say that inasmuch as. a grant of £3000 had been made to the Otago University for the erection of buildings for a Veterinary School —a grant which the Minister considers to be sufficient for the purpose —and that a grant of £1200 a year has been made for the miiintenance of such school, it is i evident." that the establishment of i the Veterinary School is'no longer a matter for" the' Government but for the council, which, ' I presume, will shortly begin to erect the' buildings required. "^As the' work of the first year m yet.erj.nary science' does not require 'a special biiijding, but is taken jn 'common with that or tjis Medical School, Jhere js no reason, *jn tjae opinion of, the Minister, wjiy tlie Veterinary School should not begin work at once, and it js possible that if the council w&T§> aware that students . were waiting to taks tfie course it might see its way to establish the school without delay." It was resolved that the Inspectorgeneral and Mr Kingston be informed what- the council proposes doing m the matter of a new Veterinary School. After discussion the council passed I the following motion: —"That Mr Ansionibe be asked to. modify the plans of 'fee school to bring the cost of the building' wjthin £3000 and the equipment to £500," and ,to jtal} fpr tenders to be submitted to the 1 council at its next meeting. The plans to'be' submitted to the Veterinary Committee and approved of before tenders are called for." —Otago Daily Times.
