PERPETUATING OLD-TIME MEMORIES.

Nicoll has tabled a notice of motion for next meeting of the BorougK Council, which has for its purpose the changing "of-the name ot that portion of Wakanui road running through the borough, to Victoria Street.. Old residents will be acquainted with the fact that upwards of thirty years ago, this road was one ot the chief thoroughfares through the town. Many a pioneer travelled by that 'route, it being the track from the large hill-foot estates to Mr Moore s (Glenmark) of Wakanui. Taking a course through the rive.r near Spencer's, it commences its course through the tovhi jttst above the late site of the Old Men's Home, passing through Cameron Street, and thence-joiningthe present Wakanui road on the East side.' Many of the cottager's gardens through which it passes are heavily dressed with gravel. Only last week I unearthed an old-time New Zealand penny piece beneath "the track. To my mind this road should be named so as to perpetuate the memory of some pioneer—Turton, Newton,_ or others—whose names are associated with the town's early history, and whose names I cannot find on the official map of the borough. I have no desire to see the name of Victoria passed over, and perhaps to name the new drive through the Domain would be more fitting, allowing the 'hard road of the wayfarer for association with our earliest founders. I feel sure Cr\Nicoll will take a suggestion m the spirit m which it is written ; hence^e^lne^^^^^
