MR JOHN STUDHOLME'S LIBERALITY.
At a meeting of the Otago University Council m Dunedin oh Friday it was resolved to confer the status of professor on the following gentlemen at present engaged at lecturers at the University: Mr D. R. White, education ; Dr Colquhoun, medicine; Dr Barnett,- surgery; Dr Roberts, pathology; Dr^Ogston, medical jurisprudence and public health; Dr Fl.o. Batchelor, midwifery' and gynecology; Dr Lindo Ferguson, ophthalmology; Mr D! B. Waters, metallurgy and assaying. . Mr John Studholme, of Coldstream, wrote to the Council offering £200 a year for three years to endow a chair of domestic science m Otago University, * the first payment to be made as soon as the professor actually takes up the position. The stipulations lie makes are that a chair of domestic science and not a mere lectureship should be established, that V fully qualified professor should be appointed, and that the Council should use-its best eildeavours to get a course m domestic science admitted by the Senate of the New j Zealand University. Some time since a similar offer was made to Canterbury College, but the authorities, after 1 giving the matter lengthy consideration and^ entering into negotiations with' Miss Gilchrist, Tennessee University, decided not to entertain^the proposal... ; ; The Otago Council spoke very favr ourably of the offer.\but as Mr Studholme "did not seek a final answer until November, it was decided that a sub-committee be appointed to consider the proposal.
