COUNTY WATER SUPPLY

Judging by the deputations that waited on the Ashburton County Coun- , cil at its monthly meeting on Friday, the water supply service- m the Waterton and Flemington districts is m a very unsatisfactory, state, and the proposal of the Council to shut off an existing private race, and to supersede it with an entirely new race, appears not to have met with the fullest approval of the whole body of settlers concerned. It also appears by a report furnished to the Council by its overseer, that the levels of the existing race are so bad that the water has not been given an uninterrupted flow, and this has caused an abnormal growth of weeds, which the settlers have neglected to clean out regularly, and the result has been that those depending on the water at the tail-end of the race .have thereby suffered loss and inconvenience through being at times —more particularly m the summer months— short of water, which is so necessary where stock is depastured.- It was pointed out to the deputations at the meeting that the farmers had themselves chiefly to blame for the unsatisfactory condition of the water service of the districts, and with a view to overcoming the difficulty that has arisen, the chairman (Mr John Lambie) suggested—and this was supported by other councillors and carried —that the overseer should meet those interested on the ground at a date to be fixedy when all objections and 'suggestions would be noted, and the Council would thereby be enabled at a future meeting to advance some scheme whereby the, wishes of all ■concerned would ,0e given' effect to as far as possible. The decision of the Council was warmly .approved by the deputations.
