TINWALD YARDS.

TUESDAY—FEBRUARY 4th. There was a good attendance at the Tinwald yards on the occasion of the ordinary weekly sale. The entry, although not large, was in excess of that yarded at any late sales, As a result of the recent rains, and the increased prospects for an autumnal growth of feed, there was a perceptible hardening of the market, especially for store sheep and lambs, and the demand was much keener.

SHEEP. Fat Pens.—There were 263 cross and halfbred -ewes penned, and as this was barely sufficient to provide for local butchers' demands, competition was fairly keen, and a complete clearance was effected at tho following prices: 8 halfbreda at 9s, 30 crossbreds at 13s 2d, 11 halfbreds at 13s 2d, 14 crossbreds at 14s 6d, 15 do at 12s 9d, 19 do at 14s, 18 do at 13s 3d. 14 do at 10s 7d, 21 do at 12s ,4d, 3 do, at 12s 9d, 13 do at 8s 6d, 20 do at Us 3d, 11 do at 5s 7d, }7 do at Us 2d, 18 do at 10s, 4 merino ewes at 7s, 11 do at 6s 3d. Wethers—34 merino wethers at 7s, 15 erossbreds at 16s 6d, 1 two-tooth half bred at 15s 3d, 3 crossbreds at 12s 6d. Lambs— 447 were penned, and anything well finished sold well at a slightly advanced rate. Export buyers were operating freely, and prices were: J64 at 14s. 20 at 13s 9d, 11 at 13s 10d, 24 at 12s 9d, 28 at 17s 2d, 80 at 11s Bd, 29 at 14s 2d, 24 at 12s Qd, 07 at 11s lOd.

Store Pens. —Out of an entry of 1385 in this department, only 265 were passed in, which, is ample proof of the increased demand. Competition was better than it has been for several months past, and prices, if anything, were harder. Sales were: 22 lambs at 9s, 45 sound-mouth crossbred ewes, at 3s Id, 82 sound-mouth merino ewes 2s Bd, 117 halfbred lambs (mixed sexes) at 11s lid, 152 sorndmouth crossbred ewes at 6s, 97 full and failing-mouth crossbred owos at 6s, 100 four and six-tooth halfbrod wethers (a well-forward line) at 14s 7u, 248 lambs (mixed sexes) at 10s 7d, 244 six-mid : eight-tooth three-quui'terbrod owes at 12s 6d to 14s od, 13 aged ewes at ; Is sd. .>■..*. CATTLE. S Fat Pens. —The f,at 'pens contained 21 head of. only fair to medium beef, the greater part of the entry being comprised of unfinished sorts! Prices were: 2 cows at 30s and £4 ss, 1 at £6 15s, 1 nt £5 17s 6d. Heiferr—l at £4. 1 at £5. Steers —1 at £li _i)s, I at £4 17s fid, m.d I at £3 ss. Store I'ens. —There was but lit tic competition, and prices did not show my improvement. Sales were: 1 dry cow at 355, 1 cow in profit at £4 Bs. 1 yearling steer vi 6s, 1 springer at 365, 2 heifers at £3 3s, 2" dry cows it 20s each.
