CHURCH WORK AND MEMBERSHIP.
TV the Editor. Sir,-—lf, according to Mr Hewitson, the Church to-day is preponderating^ feminine in its membership, how would, you account for the g*aols being-dis-tinctly masculine in their membership? In the same issue in which you quote Mr Hewitson, you also have a clipping referring, doubtless, to. the New. Zealand prisons, in which it is stated that "of the prisoners who went into the gaols during 1906 2318' were males and 352 females.". If. these extremes., which you have set before your readers, are true, they furnish food for very serious reflection. It is not my_ purpose toventilate those reflections just now. I wish only to emphasise facts which have, coincidentally, appeared in your columns. BERTIE CRAYON.
