THE GREAT BARRIER MURDER.

Wellington, October 4. The Post understands that the police authorities have received a cable message from the Superintendent of Police of New 'outh Wales, stating that a man, answer* ine to the portrait and description of Oaffrey, the Great Barrier murderer, has been arrested The man in custody has, however, on his breast some tattoo marks, which are not noted in the description of Caffrey sent np by the New Zealand polios, bat it was quite possible they did not know of these. Geffrey’s mate, Penn, has, it is believed, also been seen in New South Wales. The supposition is the two men landed in i«ew South Wales after abandoning the Sovereign of the Seas in sash a position that she would be wrecked, and create an impress! m that all hands had neen drowned. Probably an officer will be sent from Auckland to Sydney, to see if the man in custody is really Oaffrey.

The man arrested in New Sooth Wafas has & similar figure, but he has also the American fl»g, which is not known to occur on Cjff'-ey’s body.
