Letter from Sir George Grey, to Donald McLean Esq. (no date.) My dear McLean, In compliance with your wishes, I have sent out to you Mr. W. Fitzgerald, who will deliver this note to you. I have had more trouble than I expected in getting money, but I have now obtained £3,000; and I shall have no difficulty in obtaining another £1000 or £1500, if necessary. When I left, you had spent about £51,900; and I authorised you to spend another sum of £1100, if you thought an advantageous purchase could be made with it. I now can authorise you to spend £1500 more if you can make an advantageous purchase in the Wairarapa. So that, in all, you will have had £4400 placed at your dis-posal for this purpose; and the sum of £3000 will still be left for Te Hapuku. I have not yet quite determined upon my own future movements. I think of starting upon Thursday morning, to join you again. But I am in the hope of hearing from you between to-day (Tuesday) and that date; and my movements will depend much upon what news you may send me. You can have the money whenever you send in a requisition for it. If I came out upon Thursday, without again hearing from you, I shall have brought £2000 with me. Pray use your exertion to keep the first payments you agree to make as low as possible, as there is much difficulty in getting such large sums at once. Everyone here is delighted with the success we have had so far. A mail has come in from England, but it brings no news of any interest. I trust you are well, and are going on prosperously. Faithfully yours (Signed) G. Grey. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
