Poverty Bay, Aug. 16, 1866 My dear Sir I beg leave to enclose a list of sundry articles which were destroyed by the Hauhaus in my house at Waerengaahika in November last. If compensation should be allowed by the Government for losses during the war in this district I may as well put in a claim as any one else. The enclosed list does not at all fully represent what I have lost, for it is a difficult matter to call to mind every single article that was left in the house; and besides there are some things which it is next to impossible to put a price on. Among other things not mentioned in my list is a collection of botanical specimens which to me was exceedingly valuable, and if I were to price it according to the value which I set upon it other people would probably consider my valuation absurd, and therefore I would rather leave it out altogether. You will probably hear from other quarters that we are going on very quietly here still. Rapata Whakapuhia, the messenger who went to take the reply to Anaru Matete's letter, returned on Friday last. He brought no further letter, but he brings word that most of the Turanga fugitives are anxious to return. Anaru urges these people to hold themselves aloof from the Government and, if they will not join him, at all events to sit still and watch events. He says further that he is about to go to Waikato to see Matutaera and get orders from him and when he has decided what further steps he will take he will send word here to let people know. I remain Yours sincerely W. L. Williams Articles destroyed by the Hauhaus in the house of Archd. W. L. Williams, at Waerengaahika, Poverty Bay, in the month of November, 1865. £. s. d.
