Government House New Zealand Decr. 22/ 1871 (?6) My dear McLean, Fox said before he left that the Commission appointing you as Chairman and Pitt and Hutton as Members of an unpaid Commission to report on the Harbour Defences, wd. be prepared at once. I have heard nothing more about it; and, as you know, something of this kind is necessary to justify the retention of Pitt, as Ministers asked.
