Letter from A.H. Wynyard to Donald McLean Esq. dated 26th. March 1859 My dear McLean, By the last mail I sent you a few lines in reference to a young man going out to New Zealand, as a sheep-farmer. I now send you an extract from a letter respecting a man who would be a great acquisition to any man having a sheep run in your Colony. He is known from his early days as a ----- (?) of sheep, - a man that thoroughly knows his business; honest, sober, and industrious; and these qualities are not often found conjoined in a New Zealand emigrant; and as I know it is the case in this instance, it has struck me. Steward or Stafford or Bell may find such an individual the very thing of all others they are most in need of. As regards the market generally, you can, on my guarantee, recommend the man quite safely; and if you have a vacancy on any of your own runs, you could not do better than secure him yourself. I write this to you on the spur of the moment, as ten days hence I shall be at sea again on my way to the Cape; and am, as you will see by the date, at Paris, where I arrived last night on a ten days' visit to Sir George Swanson. My time here has been so cut short, by having to leave England in April, instead of May; that I have not had one moment to spare; and so for this trip I must, on my ----- (?) send on five up to -----(?) over the time I might otherwise have spent for amusements. London is a wonderful city; but this I should say is perhaps the most striking city in the world; and we may live (or love) in substantial comfort at Home; but till now is -----(?) to effect; and in this respect they have been superlatively successful.
