Te Teko Jan. 11th 1872 My Dear Sir, I have written officially applying for a Sub Inspectorship, my reason for so doing is simple, to get a standing in the regular force of the Colony, as if I were to leave it longer others might get appointed to A.C. and I should be Junior to them in A.C. though senior in Militia which would be placing me at a disadvantage. I am perfectly satisfied with my present appointment and quite willing to take charge of the Contgt. notwithstanding my wish to be posted to A.C. - I have lately seen Paerau he was rather dissatisfied at the idea of a road but if you or Mr. Ormond asked them they would "whakaaro" it, I think it would be a very good thing if either you or Mr. Ormond were to have a meeting with the Uriwera either at Whakatane or Ruatoki but they would require notice as they are so scattered, I think the road can be put through the principal difficulty is the inter-tribal jealousy - they should be allowed to do the work themselves. I improved the road to Ahikereru so that packhorses can go in Old Paerau objected but I told him it was necessary as I must get food in for my men who were looking for Te Kooti and after a talk he consented to my finishing it - My men are still engaged in road work and making bridges to Galatea the swamp road here is finished so that cart or horse can cross but it requires a great deal of work yet - I am just going to start sawyers at work in the bush at Galatea to cut timber for bridges and houses - I start from Galatea on the 13 with 20 men to Tutaepukepuke to try and get hold of Te Kooti if he is there - The Uriwera on coast will be badily off if they do not get road work soon - Believe me to remain Yours truly George Preece
