Woodlands Te Pohul 18th. November 1868 Dear Sir, In the present state of native affairs, I cannot but feel we are, here, in a most dangerous position. I think, Sir, when you consider that ohue is the key of Napier, and that any movement by the natives must necessarily be by this place, that you will deem it advisable that a small body of men should be sent up to act as a scouting party, who would be able to give timely notice of natives moving this way, and also confidence to the settlers. There are two of the Constabulary beyond ohue; one, (Sullivan, half-caste) who, with his Hau hau wife, passed by last week, located, I believe, about Taupo; and the other at Paul Hapi's place. But it is probable, in any movement of the natives towards Petane, they would come by Mohaka, and cross the Mangatararu Range, and thus no information would be received till they arrived. I think the Scouting party would obviate this. If this cannot be complied with, I hope, at least, you will send a Trooper to Messrs. Lawiston's and Galbraith's (?) place at ohue, with instructions to look out at Titiokur daily. Messrs. G. and L. are very anxious this should be done. Having no post here, and the nearest P.O. being at Petane, 20 miles distant, will you allow me to send the Trooper stationed here, to Petane, for letters and papers, as information by way of Mohaka would be valuable. Should you not be able to agree with either of the foregoing suggestions, I shall not think it advisable to remain, but would come into Port; and I have no doubt the settlers at Petane will deem it prudent to follow my example, being, upon my removal, entirely exposed. I remain dear Sir most truly yours (Signed) John Parsons. To:- Donald McLean Esq. Napier.
