Otawhao, Sepr. 10, 61. Dear Sir, I am obliged for the August numbers of the "Manuhiri Tuarangi", which you kindly sent me. I was about to write to you to enquire whether a few more copies of that publication could not be allowed for my large district. At present only 3 or 4 copies circulate in my district including Maungatautari on the East, and as far as Waipa on the West, and back beyond Rangitoto, etc. etc. I am very anxious to hear the policy of Sir G. Grey. The kingites do not at all appear disposed to yield to Sir G. Grey the points required by Governor Browne. They say that they will not give up their king and flag, or the plunder, or make compensation, they will not allow roads to be made, land to be sold, or the murderers to be given up. A few, but only a few, are favourable to the plunderbeing given up, but on all other points they are agreed. They have not manifested any joy at Sir George's appointment. Many are pleased at the change of Governors, and say if Sir George is coming to allow them their king and flag it will be very good, that if he requests them to give them up they will not do so. Governor Grey will find some hard work before him, with little or no desire to look up to him any more than to any other Governor. I shall be glad to know your opinion as to our future prospects in Waikato. I very much regret the position the Bishop has taken. He has certainly not known the real merits of the case. Wm. King is still at Kihikihi, 2 1/2 miles from Otawhao, where he is planting potatoes. I remain, Dear Sir, Yours truly, Jno. Morgan.
