Hamilton 30th. November 1869 My dear Sir, Hetit was at Alexandra again yesterday. Te Kooti is reported to be at or near Tuhua on the Whanganui river. He has only 40 men; is very much dispirited, and without food, or the means of procuring any, as the King natives will not supply him. Hetit was at Tokangamutu the other day, and saw Rewi, who has sent out a party to bring Te Kooti in; or rather, asking him to come and see them. Rewi speaks bitterly against Te Kooti, and from all I hear, I think it possible that he may make a prisoner of him, and hand him over to the Government. Rewi, in talking the other day to Te Hura, said the Maoris themselves were to blame for all the recent troubles; and that he did not blame the Pakehas at all, except in one instance - referring to the Missionaries who got the Maoris to sign the Treaty of Waitangi. I am infomed that Tawhio, Rewi, and Manuhiri, are very short of money - in fact, that they have nothing. It appears that Manuhiri has, for some time past, been expecting some money from Mr. C.O. Davis, for rents, accruing from lands owned by him at Mangere. Mr. C.O. Davis has, for a long time, been in constant communication with Manuhiri. He sends his letters to the care of Mr. Hill, of Alexandra, under cover, addressed to Lewis Hetit. What the tenor is, of these letters, I know not; but I think they exercise a baneful influence on the Native mind. I think there is but little doubt that Mr. Davis is trying to counteraot your influence with the natives. Manuhiri swears by him, but Rewi dislikes him. Everything goes on smoothly and quietly in the District. I remain, my dear Sir, Yours very truly (Signed) W. Moule. To:- The Hon. D. McLean Native and Defence Minister Auckland.
