Nuhaka Decr. 31st /64 Dear Sir As Mr. Fitzgerald is now going to Town I take the opportunity to send a few lines although I should have liked to have seen the letters by this mail but Mr. Fraizer cannot stop - Since it came to Nuhaka the people of that place held a meeting at which I was present when they handed over to the Government all the land from where the road ascends from the beach at the Mahia to Nuhaka River then up that stream for a short distance then crosses the hill to the south of Moumoukai then back for many miles then turns to the north and round in the direction of Maraetaha and then back to the Mahia - Ihaka is to have a reserve at Waikokopu, and there is to be a small reserve at Waitanihas - it has to be all surveyed in one block before any money arrangements are made. To survey the back country quickly I shall require an assistant - I will write a more full and proper account when the mail goes - The Natives look upon Wangawehi as gone to sea but they wish to have the Ngaitu affair settled first, Ihaka and his party appear to be suspicious of the intentions of Turanga, They say that Raharuhi is not dying but that he means to show himself in his proper colours - he says that he only wants to let his dogs lose to end the fight in favour of the Natives - I am very anxious to see the mail so as to hear from you, I believe that I have done everything for the best as far as I could - Nuhaka now , the flat land is very good indeed and sufficient of it - Ihaka is very pleased about his vessel - I remain, Dear Sir Your Obt. Servt. S. Locke To His Honor D. McLean Napier
