English
AhuAhu 21 Dec. 1846 Dear Sir, On Saturday night I heard from Whakatumutumu and that neighbourhood to request that people to join them in an expedition against the European settlers at Wanganui to avenge the death of Rauparaha. They say that chief has been put to death by the English and they will retaliate on the English at Wanganui not to destroy life but to obtain property. The Whakatumutumu people refused to comply as did also Taunui ma at the Paripari some of the Tuhua people however have written them a joint letter to dissuade them from it. I cannot now add more as the natives are waiting to be off but I thought it matter of duty that I should state the above. I remain Dr. Sir Yours truly, John Whiteley D. McLean Esqr.
