Hamilton 26th. July 1870. My dear McLean, My officials of yesterday forwarded to you thru the Govt. Agent in Auckland will inform you of the present uneasy state of feeling amongst the friendlies at Raglan and Aotea my private opinion is that it arises from the following causes the one of disappointment and mortification that the HauHaus have been able to commit a robbery on what they believe to be their territory with impunity the non-interference of the Govt. in the matter, their being bounced threatened and laughed at by the Hauhaus at Kawhia on their late visit there, and tho last not least their state of idleness and want of employment and more plentiful supplies of food, they are not well off and a little employment would I think distract their minds from building pas and establishing a system of reprisals which if carried on will eventually I fear involve us in trouble, I would have gone to Raglan and Aotea this week, but have not got a horse that will take me there - but I have written strongly to the Natives to at once desist from the course they have adopted of reprisals on Hauhaus. I thin k my letter will have some effect on them and at least cause them to pause before they commit any illegal acts. I congratulate you on the success that the Government propositions have met with in the House of Representatives and trust that the Session will now be soon over and that you will be again in Auckland. Everything is very quiet among the Kings party at Tokangamutu, I hear occasionally from old Tamati who is very friendly in his communications. I am anxiously awaiting the decision of the Govt. as to my fate whatever it may be and am Yours faithfully William N. Searancke.
