Hamilton Decr. 27th. 1870. My dear Sir, I am in receipt of yours of the 16th. inst. today only, as regards Hettel it appears that the caution came from his own relations not to go away from home or if he did, not to go by himself and a suggestion from same parties (the Ngatimaniapotos) that if he went to Alexandra it would be better for him to remain there. Hettel did not however take any notice of it but he is not now allowed to go to Te Kuiti I hear I have seen him twice since Todd's murder but either he knows nothing o is very reticent for I could not get a word of information out of him tho I took the trouble to sit up half the night with him. I have not heard anything more from the Natives, being unable to go to Alexandra as formerly (not now keeping any Horses.) Every word that I have heard I have forwarded to you officially. The general feeling here with reference to the murder is still very strong daily and hourly the question is asked what is the Govt. going to do do and I regret to say that the feeling has been increased by Te Wheoro's report on his return from Te Kuiti. Looking at the results of our numerous little wars and engagements with the Natives, I am not of opinion that another war is at all desirable but I believe that taking into consideration the views as expressed by Manuhiri to Te Wheoro, the Screw might be most advantageously put on him and his Hauhau friends by the establishment of stringent Aukatis along the frontier line on any excuse being allowed to go or to come. Of course this is my opinion only and has been so for years. As to conciliatory measures, I fear/they will avail us but little.
