Wellington, March 25, /51. Dr. McLean, I believe you are aware that I am about through Mr. Ankebell to dispose of the Trading Station at Ahuriri, as your name has been mentioned in one of Mr. Ankebells letters as the holder of some agreement, thereanent - I have given my views on that subject to Mr. Ankebell and need not therefore obtrude them upon you, but what I wish to urge is, my claim to some favorable consideration at your hands as representing the Government, in any arrangements which may be made with regard to the Lease from the Natives, or the granting of any licince or privilege which may confer any value upon the Station - I have now been engaged in constantly Trading through my Agents at Ahuriri for upwards of five years, I have taken many thousands of pounds worth of Native produce from thence, in prosecuting this Trade I have lost four Vessels and a large amount of merchandise, and I have now many hundred pounds at stake and for which I fear I shall for the most part look in vain for due returns. I hope therefore you will not think me unreasonable in asking your favorable consideration in any point that may arise in this matter, so that I who have had all the risk and trouble and expense for the last five years may have the benefit of any privilege which the new state of things may require or which circumstances may permit, in preference to any party who as a new-comer or a side-waiter of events may perhaps claim them. Accept my apology for troubling you with this statement, but it is a rather serious thing for me and I want to get out of it as well as I can. Trusting all is going on well with you in your vocation - I remain, dr. McLean, Yours very truly, G. W. Moore.
